As part of our ongoing commitment to communication throughout the 100 Reasons Y capital campaign, we’re excited to share a deeper look at how your support is helping to build the new YMCA in Barrie.
Every great community project starts with trust. At the YMCA, that trust is built on consistent transparency and clear updates, knowing exactly where every dollar goes, how it’s protected, and what it helps bring to life.
The new YMCA in Barrie will be a place where families connect, youth find safety, and older adults stay active and engaged. It’s a once-in-a-generation project made possible by the strength of many: public partners, private donors, and community members who believe in building belonging. Sharing these updates is one of the ways we ensure that everyone who invests in this vision can clearly see the progress being made.
Your support doesn’t just help fund a building, it helps build a community.
This project moves forward through a balanced, horizontal funding strategy: multiple partners advancing together to keep momentum strong.
Confirmed contributions include:
To date, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka has secured approximately 80% of the project cost through government grants, fundraising, and the sale of the former Barrie property. The remaining portion will be raised through the 100 Reasons Y campaign.
Together, this collaborative investment is bringing the vision to life, creating a place where health, belonging, and opportunity will thrive for generations.
Every gift to the 100 Reasons why campaign supports the construction of a new centre of community. Your support plays a direct role in shaping the essential spaces that will serve families, youth, and individuals for years to come. Your donation builds the spaces we need to offer the programs that change lives.
A state-of-the-art aquatics centre where children learn life-saving skills, older adults enjoy low-impact movement, and families come together.
“When I was six, I didn’t know how to swim… the Y changed that story for me.” — Danielle’s Story
Your gift helps build accessible pools, adaptive equipment, and welcoming programs for everyone.
From the gymnasium and fitness studios to the indoor walking track, the YMCA will be a destination for movement and connection. Group fitness classes, personal training, and drop-in recreation will help people of all ages and abilities stay active and inspired.
Your support ensures that every member, from first-time visitors to lifelong athletes, has a place to build strength, resilience, and confidence.
In Simcoe County, 576 cases per 100,000 people are diagnosed with cancer, a rate higher than the national average, and cardio-pulmonary hospitalizations are 22.5% higher than the provincial average. These realities make accessible, community-based recovery programs more important than ever. In partnership with Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH), the new YMCA in Barrie will include specialized spaces for cardiac and cancer rehabilitation, bridging the gap between clinical recovery and community wellness.
Your donation helps make these programs possible, offering patients a safe, supported transition into lifelong health.
For young people experiencing homelessness or housing instability, the new YMCA in Barrie will be more than a gym; it will be home. Your support helps build 12 fully equipped, supportive housing units where youth aged 16–24 can find safety, stability, and the guidance they need to rebuild their lives. With 11% of Simcoe County’s homeless population made up of youth aged 16–25, this investment creates real, life-changing opportunities where they’re needed most.
Simcoe County’s older-adult population is steadily growing, with 19.8% of residents now aged 65+. The new YMCA in Barrie will offer a welcoming, accessible space where older adults can stay active, independent, and socially connected. With group fitness classes, walking clubs, and wellness programs designed for healthy aging, the Y will be a place to move, laugh, and belong.
Your donation helps create these vital spaces and programs—combating isolation, strengthening community, and supporting healthy aging for everyone.
From the gymnasium to the child and youth program rooms, from accessible indoor playgrounds to welcoming community gathering spaces, your donation builds the places where belonging happens — where families connect, friendships form, and community thrives.
In Simcoe County, nearly one in four residents report feeling less connected to their community since the pandemic, and 43% of families say they struggle to find affordable, inclusive recreation options. The new YMCA in Barrie will help change that.
Your donation is an investment in people — in confidence, in safety, and in a stronger, more connected community.
Here’s how we care for the gifts entrusted to us: simply and clearly:
“Transparency is how we honour trust and how we grow stronger together,” says Karen Pulla, Chief Development Officer. “Every gift represents a commitment between our organization and the people who believe in our mission. It’s our responsibility to share how each and every gift is making a real, measurable difference.”
When the doors open at 535 Bayview Drive in 2027, the centre is projected to:
There are many ways to be part of building the new YMCA in Barrie — whether you give today, plan a legacy gift for the future, or make a major investment that creates lasting impact.
Every contribution, no matter the size, helps move us closer to opening the doors. One-time or monthly donations directly support the programs and spaces that will make this Centre of Community come alive, from the aquatics centre to youth housing and older adult wellness.
Local businesses, service clubs, and organizations are vital partners in bringing this project to life. Corporate gifts can fund specific spaces, sponsor programs, or help ensure accessibility for all. Naming and recognition opportunities are available for leadership-level contributions.
Transformational gifts from individuals and families help shape signature areas of the new YMCA in Barrie, from the gymnasium to the youth housing floor to health partnership spaces. These gifts leave a visible, lasting legacy of community leadership.
Some donors choose to make their impact part of their life story through a legacy gift, such as a bequest, a life insurance policy, or a gift of securities. These planned contributions ensure that future generations will benefit from the same sense of belonging that the YMCA has provided for decades.
No matter how you give, your generosity helps build more than walls; it builds opportunity, connection, and a healthier community for everyone.
