Barrie, ON - June 25, 2025 | On June 24th, at 535 Bayview Drive, the future site of the new YMCA Centre of Community in Barrie, the YMCA community gathered for a heartfelt event, Beyond the Blueprints – Honouring Janice Laking. This special occasion recognized not only the start of construction of the YMCA’s new 77,000-square-foot facility but also the leadership, generosity, and dedication of former mayor, lifelong philanthropist, and honourary co-chair of the YMCA's Barrie Capital Campaign, Janice Laking.

During the event, Jill Tettmann, President and CEO of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, passionately remarked,

“Today isn’t just about bricks and mortar. Today is about going beyond the blueprints. It’s about why we do what we do at the Y and honouring someone who has long been an advocate for this community. Janice Laking is the embodiment of belonging and strength through connection. Her belief in the vision and mission of the YMCA has had a ripple effect, inspiring countless others to give back.”

Karen Pulla, Chief Development Officer of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, echoed these sentiments, saying,

“Today is a celebration not just of what we’re building, but of the incredible people making it all possible. Janice’s energy, heart, and lifelong commitment have left an indelible mark on Barrie. We’re so lucky to have you as part of the YMCA family.”

A particularly touching moment came as Brian Tamblyn, Co-Chair of the YMCA’s Barrie Capital Campaign, announced plans to honour Janice Laking’s legacy by naming a dedicated space within the new facility after her.

“Janice’s remarkable leadership and generosity have shaped Barrie in ways that will endure for generations. This recognition is our way of showing appreciation for everything she has done for this city.”

The event also featured remarks from Lieutenant-Colonel (retired) Bill Sergeant, as well as Sandra Chalmers, Janice Laking’s daughter, who shared a meaningful tribute highlighting her mother’s unwavering dedication to her community.

The new YMCA in Barrie is far more than just a fitness centre; it represents a $70-million commitment to community well-being, inclusivity, and growth. With support from municipal, county, provincial, and philanthropic partners, this multifaceted facility has been designed to address local needs through purposeful programming and impactful partnerships.

Highlights of the new YMCA include transitional youth housing, created in collaboration with the County of Simcoe, to address the critical issue of youth homelessness. Additionally, the centre will offer rehabilitative programs in partnership with Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) and the Hudson Regional Cancer Centre, pairing health services with recreational spaces like an aquatics centre, an indoor track, and multipurpose studios. The YMCA will also provide spaces dedicated to family activities, youth programs, and senior engagement, promoting opportunities for multigenerational connection.

The new YMCA in Barrie, expected to open in the fall of 2027, will be a centre of community - a welcoming place where people of all ages can connect, grow, and thrive. Just like Janice Laking has throughout her life, it will stand as a lasting symbol of opportunity, inclusion, and impact for years to come.
