The Weight of Community Challenges & the YMCA’s Inclusive Impact
YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka

In January, we shared Jill Tettmann's Reason Y, which is rooted in belonging, safety, and the belief that everyone deserves a place where they feel supported.

Jill’s story also points to a larger truth: inclusivity isn’t just a value, it’s a necessity.

Across Simcoe and Muskoka, many individuals and families are facing real and growing challenges.

More than 51,000 people in the region live in poverty, with disproportionate impacts on single adults, lone-parent families, Indigenous residents, and racialized communities. Nearly 1 in 5 households spend over 30% of their income on housing, and food insecurity continues to rise, now affecting roughly 1 in 4 households. These statistics are well above provincial averages.

These pressures don’t exist in isolation. Research consistently links financial strain, housing instability, and food insecurity with increased anxiety, depression, chronic illness, and reduced overall wellbeing. Just as concerning, nearly half of residents aged 12 and older report a weak sense of community belonging, a critical factor in mental and emotional health.

Why Inclusivity Matters

When people lack access to basic support such as affordable recreation, social connection, or community spaces, the ripple effects touch every part of life.

Preventative support is often the first thing lost when finances are tight or stress is high. Yet these are the very supports that help people cope, stay healthy, and feel less alone.

This is where the YMCA’s work becomes essential.

The YMCA’s Inclusive Impact in Action

Every day, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka works to remove barriers and meet people where they are with respect, care, and compassion.

Why the New YMCA in Barrie Matters

‍For far too long, Barrie has been without a YMCA.

As the city grows, so does the need for inclusive, accessible spaces that support people across every stage of life, especially those carrying the heaviest of challenges.

The new YMCA in Barrie is being intentionally designed to deepen and expand this inclusive impact through:

These are not separate initiatives. They are part of a wraparound approach to community wellbeing.

A Place to Belong and Shine for Everyone

In a region where many are navigating economic stress, caregiving responsibilities, or social isolation, the YMCA serves as a place of relief, connection, and belonging.

With the support of generous donors and community members, the new YMCA in Barrie will ensure that this sense of belonging reaches further than ever before, strengthening individuals, families, and our entire community.
